Antipolo beats San Mateo @
the Ynares Cup: 89-75 The home team once again proved that they are still the team to beat in the YNARES CUP 2002 as they continue their winning streak by beating San Mateo basketball team. The first quarter yielded too much fouls against Antipolo, as their big men went into foul trouble at a very early start. Coach Freddie Hubalde had a hard time rotating its big men like Protacio and Enrile who were 3 fouls a piece during the first half. Coach Hubalde had to take out Zapanta who got 3 fouls consecutively only in the first quarter. De castro took over Zapanta's absence as point guard, and did his fastbreak plays and foul counted shots too well. The second quarter unit was able to run and gun their performance as they take a double digit lead with a few minutes left at the second. Zapanta and Imperial knowing their foul state, dished off assists for their teammates at the paint, and Enrile responded very well. Ober's perimeter jump shots killed San Mateo's defense and Muyco's never say die rebounds worked out perfectly during the second half. Antipolo leads 16 including the buzzer beater layup of Zapanta for the second quarter. (Antipolo 43, San Mateo 27) San Mateo knowing their possible loss at the home court of Antipolo City, tightened up their defense as they man-to-man Antipolo who got multiple turnovers at the start of the third. The defense reduced Antipolo's lead to as low as 10. But Muyco, Manding, Hubalde, Del Fonso who seemed passing basketballs since high school, loosened up San Mateo's defensive strategy through surprising cross court passes and assists. Manding showed that white men can shoot and jump, and made 3 consecutive jump shots to preserve Antipolo's lead. Hubalde's 3 points simply surprised San Mateo's effort to reduce the lead. The fourth quarter, showed more intensity as San Mateo tightened their man-to-man defense even more. But in San Mateo's every effort to make a run, the Antipolo team has simply its own basketball run which even increased the lead to as high as 20. Imperial's foul counted shot from court to court was very timely and effective, while San Mateo continued their man-to-man defense. Zapanta, though at foul trouble still managed to make 5 interceptions and fastbreak finishes with unselfish help coming from Derek Hubalde. Enrile and Protacio who were both 4 fouls, conquered the paint and as second by second, the San Mateo's hope for winning completely vanished despite of the six 3-point shots made by Felipe, Bernardo and Del Rosario combined. The game ended @ Antipolo 89, San Mateo 73. The Antipolo City Basketball Seniors Team led by their Sports Coordinator, Mr. Teddy Gatlabayan and Coach Freddie Hubalde now stands at 5-1.
